The Kings Arms Litton began its life (so local history has it) in 1420 and as a food mill it was built in this location alongside the river Chew for the obvious and functional reasons in that most mills were located predominantly alongside a water course of some kind.
It was in its heyday a great meet and greet place for the farmers and land workers from the surroundings areas of the Chew Valley region and the great Mendip Hills and it is this relationship that seeded it enormous success because as the beautiful spring water tumbled down from and through the 270 million year old limestone of the Mendips it graciously gathered enough energy to grind the corn and barley grown on the gentle slopes of the valley.
Such are the micro climates that exist all sides of the Mendip Hills, fertile land is everywhere around so the arable crop history that supported the communities of times past and the livestock that also fed upon it have simply generated the most interesting of locations in this most rural area it is also so easy to imagine all the farmers and wife’s meeting here at this central and busy location throughout the medieval and modern times just chatting sharing and caring for their families , farms and villages.
Clearly the valley and its mill have been feeding many folks travellers and locals alike and for centuries untold and today as this charming of stories roles on the pub and its restaurants and gardens in themselves terraced, green and also tumbling towards the riverside just carries the story, the folklore and the journey of time onward.
This is a place to enjoy and is full of all of life’s experiences created by centuries of people living , eating, trading and gathering to celebrate and is it seems blessed by nature itself , and yes people and time rest here easy , comfortably and joyously and very naturally.
